#FeesMustFall, #GuptaGate and Every Other Hashtag You Can Think Of

FeesMustFall

by Nick Lotter on October 17, 2016

I have been thinking through all the unrest and violence in South Africa and the general outlook of doom and gloom; from #GuptaGate to #FeesMustFall and even #WarrapenKeegan, and these are my thoughts from a Christian perspective that I believe will give hope where there feels like there isn’t any:

1) The world was not created this way. After God completed His work of CREATION, everything was “very good” (Gen 1:31). Overflowing from the infinite goodness of God came the creation of a good and perfect world.

2) All of the unrest, injustice, racism, corruption, destruction and brutality that we are seeing is a direct result of the FALL. When Adam snubbed his nose at all the good fruit God gave him to eat, and went instead for the one fruit God forbid him to eat, his rebellion brought about the fall of the creation from a good and perfect world, to a world corrupted by sin. The world has ever since been falling inevitably to ruin as a result of its corruption, which is inherent in every one of us.

3) Because God is still and always will be infinitely good, He provided REDEMPTION through the death & resurrection of Jesus Christ. The blood of Christ settled in full the debt that was owed for our sin & rebellion against God and satisfied God’s justice on our behalf. Though we set our hope in things like successful protests, presidents, governments, police, law, politics, etc to redeem us from the destruction we find ourselves in, redemption can only be found when we set our hope in Jesus alone.

4) God has promised RESTORATION. The world is in chaos and headed for destruction, but God has promised a new creation where everything will be perfectly and eternally restored to His perfect design, all evil will be forever destroyed, and all things will be united in Jesus Christ (Eph 1:9-10, 19-23). The Church has perfect assurance of this future, which we find in Jesus alone. All hopes of this world being restored through human effort and politics is hopeless (though we still fight for justice). Our hope is in Christ alone.

Lastly, why doesn’t God just destroy all evil and rebellion right now and bring in the restored creation immediately, you might ask?

God is “patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Could it be that if God should call time on this world right now, you would be one of those destroyed along with everything else that is hostile to God?

With one hand, God is holding back His coming justice against rebellion & sin, and with the other He is calling and reaching out to sinners to come to Him and be redeemed.

“Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake His way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.” Isaiah 55:6-7
